    W. Dean Henry

    Dec 26, 1945 – Aug 8, 2022

    W. Dean Henry, 76, passed suddenly on Monday August 8, 2022 in San Francisco after a brief illness. In testament to his life lived well, he leaves behind an extended loving family and countless devoted friends scattered across the country.

Dean was born in Texas to Kathryn Electra (Mann) and Loman Walter Henry. He graduated from Cashmere High School in Washington State in 1964, and received a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Puget Sound in 1969. During his studies at UPS, he was President of the Student Body, a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and a champion on many intermural sports.

Dean enjoyed golfing - from Sonoma to Palm Springs, Denver to Scotland -- and especially his annual “guys” trip to South America. He enjoyed traveling across the country, enjoying fine food and wine on each trip. The annual fishing trip to Alaska was something he looked forward to each year.

While he relished the wilds of the outdoors, he was dedicated to growing Legacy Partners. Only the second CEO of Legacy Partners when Preston Butcher passed the baton in 2012, Dean assumed his leadership with a zest and integrity that supported the expansion of the company from the west to the east, touching on many states in the US and decidedly more employees, business partners, and friends. He believed in every value of what a “partner” is in both his personal and professional roles, which lines overlapped much to his joy and to those who benefitted from his wisdom, his grit, and his humor. Dean was never happier than when he was surrounded by his family and friends, with a deal closing on the side.

Dean had been involved exclusively in multifamily real estate since 1969. He served on the Executive Committee of the National Multifamily Housing Council and was a member of the Policy Advisory Board of the Center for Real Estate at the University of California at Berkeley. Additionally, he was Chairman of the Multifamily Leadership Board of the National Association of Home Builders, was an active member of the Urban Land Institute, and was a former board member of Mercy Housing, a nonprofit affordable housing organization which has participated in the development, preservation and/or financing of thousands of affordable homes in the United States.

Dean enjoyed being a part of his community and giving back to others. He was a former Chairman of the YMCA of San Francisco and has served as a board member since 2003. He was also active in many other charities for causes he cared dearly about, including D’Vine Path and Cystinosis Research Foundation. Dean is survived by his wife Nelda, daughters Stephanie (Anthony) Henry, and Katie (Tony) Flowers, stepsons Shane (Rose) Arnold and Bryce Arnold, grandchildren Cameron and Anthony, step-grandchild Zach, brother Mike Henry, brother in-law Larry Cole, and nephews Kurt (Heidi) Cole, Craig (Teresa) Cole, Jesse (Mackenzie) Henry, Donnie Henry, and many cousins. He is predeceased by his parents, sister Loma Kay Cole, sister-in-law Lin Henry, and several aunts and uncles.
